• IE-Spyad adds a long list of sites and domains associated with known adware companies to the Restricted sites zone of Internet Explorer. Once you merge this list of sites and domains into the Windows Registry (using the convenient batch file), the Web sites for these companies will not be able to use cookies, ActiveX controls, Java applets, or scripting to compromise your privacy or your PC while you surf the Net. Nor will they be able to use your browser to push unwanted pop-ups, cookies, or auto-installing programs onto the PC. IE-SPYAD is not an ad blocker. It will not block standard banner ads in Internet Explorer. What this Restricted sites list of known advertisers and crapware pushers will do is: stop unwanted crapware from being installed behind your back via "drive-by-downloads"; prevent the hijacking of your home page and other key Internet Explorer settings; shut down ActiveX, Java, and scripting, all of which can be employed to push obnoxious advertising on you and compromise your privacy and security; block cookies, which can be used to monitor and track your travels around the Internet; combat obnoxious script-based popups that clutter your screen and force unwanted advertising on you. This file works only with Internet Explorer; it will have no effect whatsoever on Opera, Mozilla, Netscape 6.0/7.0, or the older Netscape Navigator/Communicator. Click on IE-SPYAD.EXE and choose to save the file on your computer. Once downloaded, double-click on the file, extract or unzip it to a location/folder on your hard drive. Go to the location where the files were extracted, and double-click on the file "install.bat". In the windows that appears, choose option 2, "INSTALL the New IE-SPYAD List," then choose option 1 to install. When finished, press any key to continue, then choose 2 to Exit. • Windows Messenger Service - Beginning with Windows NT, Microsoft included the Windows Messenger Service, and it's been built-in to each subsequent version and release of Windows over the past several years. It was originally designed to allow system administrators on client-server networks to send out brief system-wide messages to everyone connected to the network. For the most part, it's never gained much use since there are easier alternatives to sending such messages. It is being put to use however, by those who know that this Service is turned on by default in all current versions of Windows. If you've been connected to the Internet and suddenly see a window pop-up filled with information about the latest "get-rich-scheme," a college diploma, or low-rate credit cards, you're being spammed courtesy of Windows Messenger Service! Note that these are not browser windows, but resemble Windows Dialog boxes (with "Messenger Service" in the title bar), with the exception that you're generally offered no "options" besides clicking an "OK" button. Windows Messenger Service is an Internet server that's up and running on your machine, leaving it open to anyone who wants to connect to it when you're online. Unlike annoying browser pop-ups, which only show up if Internet Explorer or another browser is running, spam utilizing Windows Messenger Service can be received no matter what application you mightbe using, as long as you're connected to the Internet. Also, shutting off Windows Messenger Service will have no effect on any of the popular "instant messaging" systems you might be using; they don't rely on Windows Messenger Service (irrespective of its name) to function.
